Ryman chairman calls on the Government to do more to help small businesses in his key note talk on day three at Spring Fair.
In front of a packed audience, Theo Paphitis championed small businesses and called on the Government to close loopholes that allow large offshore businesses to avoid taxes to enable a level playing field for retailers. He added that persistence and confidence are key attributes for business owners. “I have always been a supporter of small businesses because that’s where I started out. I’d say one thing you need to have as a small business, or any sized business really is confidence in your USP. Ask yourself why does my business exist? Persistence is a great thing in business.”
Sandra Jervis, owner of Creative Cove in Lampeter said Theo’s speech was “on point. He did a wonderful talk about small businesses surviving in a world of giants.” Sandra found lots of “lovely things to bring to the shop, including Legami backpacks and their new pencil cases.”
Michael Apter, owner of four Paper Tiger stores in Edinburgh said on Linkedin: “The size and scope of the show, combined with the number of exhibitors we work with, means I’m here for all four days this year, spending hours in the halls and aisles, seeing familiar faces, reconnecting with people from the past, and meeting new people and exploring fresh opportunities for Paper Tiger Edinburgh. For serious buyers and businesses in the home and gift sector, there’s no substitute for exhibiting at or visiting a trade fair. Spring Fair remains the place to be in February.”
Michael was joint winner of the Spring Fair’s 75th Of Excellence awards Retail Ambassador Of The Year, alongside James Thomas, who runs Forever England lifestyle shops in Sherbourne, Sidmouth and Wells.
Exhibitors had a busy time as well, with Maitane Vea, tradeshow and marketing coordinator for Puckator telling StationeryNews: “Spring Fair is the ideal platform for us to highlight some of our growing licences, including the beloved Paddington Bear, the globally popular Minecraft, and the top-selling Shaun the Sheep and Mr Bean collections. These additions further expand our range with products that delight fans of all ages.
“We are also continuing to invest in our in-house collections, such as Adoramals, Foodiemals, and our latest, hottest new seller – Capybara, all of which were met with great enthusiasm by new and returning customers. Brands and collections from our UK design team, alongside our licensed partner ranges, will continue to grow in 2025, ensuring fresh and exciting offerings throughout the year. Keep an eye out for Pippi Longstocking, Hatsune Miku and Peanuts coming soon.
“A standout moment from this year’s Spring Fair was our success in the prestigious Spring Fair Product Awards. Our Swapseazzz Travel Cushion won Best New Product Award in the Gift category at the Excellence Awards.
