Pantone is infamous for their colour matching system; it’s widely recognised as being the best on the globe and provides a simple way to talk colours. Pantone were the first to use numbers for classification; perfect for colour matching, and consequently changing the face of the colour industry forever.
The Colour of the Year selection process is carried out by colour experts, who, with their knowledge, thoughtfully consider the past year’s trends from all industries to find new colour influences. 2022 is the first time in the 22-year history of the announcement that Pantone have created a brand-new shade, to reflect the changes in life during and after a pandemic.
Without further ado, 17-3938 Very Peri has been announced as the Pantone Colour of the Year selection for 2022. Described as “A New Pantone Colour Whose Courageous Presence Encourages Personal Inventiveness And Creativity”. Encompassing the hues of blue and red, Veri Peri represents both consistency, excitement, and is “a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through”.
So how does this impact the stationery industry?
During the course of the year, Veri Peri can be used strategically by brands to aid in development of their corporate identity, or the creation of new product lines.
Colour is one of the most important factors in non-verbal communication, its psychological effects are so significant that it’s thought around 90% of quick judgements are based on colour alone. More than just looking pretty, colours have been proven to affect emotions, meaning it’s undoubtedly something to consider when choosing items we’ll be using daily, giving as gifts, or hoping will increase motivation.
Shades that encompass an aura of hope and creativity, much like Veri Peri, can inspire and enthuse. Products incorporating these types of colours will carry a similar discourse; one of futuristic realisation!
